| Carol Zuckman is an experienced calligrapher and Judaica Artist, with
degrees in both Jewish Studies and Therapeutic Recreation. As a calligrapher,
Carol emphasizes the letters themselves as the focus of her art. She sees
added meaning to the commandment of “Hiddur Mitzvah” celebrating
the mitzvah, as her art testifies. Her art adds joy, beauty, and meaning
to major events in Jewish life: the holidays, weddings, birth and B’nai
Mitzvot. Carol creates art with a Jewish soul.
Carol’s art incorporates a wide range of designs and techniques from medieval illumination to bold modern graphics. Combining timeless sayings from Biblical or Talmudic sources, and organic materials, a unique, vibrant work of art is created. In her original art and Ketubot, Carol uses the traditional materials of scribes - quills, hand ground ink and 23K gold leaf on various surfaces such as calfskin vellum, parchment, papyrus, and hand crafted papers. She experiments with collage, paper cutting, and embossing in her art, adding interesting dimensions to her work. In order to make her art more accessible, Carol hand prints many of her designs on hand crafted paper. Carol’s art has been displayed at juried shows throughout the
US and Canada, most recently at the Chicago Jewish Folk Arts Festival,
and can be found in collections throughout North America and Israel.
Carol is the coordinator of By Hand and Heart, an adult craft workshop
at the St. Paul Jewish Community Center. All designs are copyright by the artist Carol Zuckman 2004. |
